Making a Difference – Fr. Gabriel Ghanoum

Making a Difference

“Be the change you want to see in the world.” (Ghandi)

Last week, NBC nightly news aired a series “Making a difference.” This series profiled ordinary people doing extraordinary things, helping neighbors or even complete strangers to find meaning and a sense of belonging. These people really believed in a cause larger than themselves and made a difference for others.

When we look at our own lives, do we ask ourselves, “Do I make a difference in the life of others?” God sees us as: “Agents of change in the world.” When you believe that, only then, can you make a difference by doing something that can change the environment around you for the better.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus answered the rich man’s quest to fulfill his purpose and meaning in life by what was still lacking of him saying “go sell… share your wealth… you will have treasure in heaven, and come follow Me.” (Luke 8:23) The rich man was keeping the commandments but not doing the commandments. When Jesus speaks of material possessions, he is challenging us to reveal what it is that we really value, following Him, or being caught up in material wealth. Jesus invited him to find happiness in a life of out-reach instead of in-reach. Jesus saw in him as an agent of change, having the potential to cultivate the seeds of greatness by sharing his wealth and gifts to increase the well-being and wealth-being of others.

When we think about our true life purpose, we are called to think of our life not from a financial-wealth standpoint, but the inner wealth-being standpoint. What brings you joy, satisfaction, drive, and excitement is your inner wealth that helps you make contribution to make a difference whenever you go. You will not experience inner wealth and fulfillment until you ask yourself what brings you meaning and significance. You will begin to make a difference when you are able to find your true life purpose in your work and/or hobbies.

When someone asks you what do you do for a living, how do you respond? When you only go to work just to get a paycheck, do only what is required of you, this is a JOB. When you are driven by an increase in prestie and position by climbing the ladder, this is a CAREER. But, when you find happiness and fulfillment and make a difference in small or large ways, you have found your true life purpose, you CALLING. The difference in these 3 titles is all about the difference you make!

Happiness does not come from money, or from the things that money buys. It comes from finding meaning and from having a positive impact on the lives of others. God created us for a life of good deeds… Whenever we serve others in any way, we are actually serving God.

“Everyone has been made for some particular work, and the desire for the work has been put into every heart.” (Rumi)
